Simply Cook have a simple plan. To design delicious recipes, and then send you a kit that allows you to recreate them.
Simply Cook don’t send the full ingredients through. They do, however, put the flavours together and give the the instructions / list of further ingredients needed to make their food.
The box sent to us had four kits. BBQ Tandoori Chicken, Malay Laksa, Beef Massaman and Bokkeumbap.
Bokkeumbap, apparently, “is hugely popular Korean style fried rice dish that makes great use of leftovers and provides a super quick and satisfying meal”. The kit consisted of Gochujang (a red chilli pepper paste), Doenjang (a Korean soybean paste) and Garlic Paste. The Beef Massaman kit came with Massaman Paste, Ginger Chicken Stock and Tamarind.
Not one to shy away from a challenge, I decided to cook both kits at the same time for four of us. Game on!
Prepping the ingredients didn’t take long. It’s a healthy mix with loads of vegetables in both dishes.
Cracking open the kits filled the kitchen with some lovely smells. The recipes were very straightforward and took less than 20 minutes each.
But it’s not the cooking that’s the big deal here. It’s not complex to put together. This is more about the flavours – that’s what you’re ordering here. Simply Cook are providing big tasting flavours that aren’t run of the mill. There’s no room for blandness. So, how did it come out?
The Bokkeumbap, a vegetarian dish, was nourishing and full of black bean flavours. An almost sticky rice with a rich depth to it and the unusual addition of a fried egg on the top, but it worked. It worked a treat!
The Beef Massaman was another triumph. The Massaman may be a mild curry but that doesn’t mean it didn’t have a full, well rounded flavour. It tasted delicious.
The advantages of having the spices and recipe and then buying your own ingredients is obvious. You can swap out any ingredients that you don’t like (we changed cabbage for kale) or even swap fish for chicken – or anything you like. It also keeps for a good while. The combinations are not run of the mill, either. If you’re looking for a meal idea for a special occasion, then this is a great place to look.
The price? For four meal kits, it’s just £8.99. That’s ridiculously low considering how much flavour they pack into those pots.
